What are dental veneers and when are they recommended?

Dental veneers are thin shells that are made of porcelain. They are designed to be bonded over the visible front teeth. Veneers are intended to mask the errors of front teeth and transform the smile of the patient. They can mask a wide-range of esthetic issues with the front teeth including misshapen teeth, discoloration, gaps between teeth, shortened crowns, gummy smile and misalignment of front teeth. The veneers are designed to be proportionate, bright and perfectly shaped such that the smile looks attractive.

Dental veneers - Smile makeover process

The smile makeover process using dental veneers requires about two to three visits. The first visit involves smile analysis and questionnaire. Our cosmetic dentist asks you questions about what you dislike about your smile and what you think can make your teeth look more attractive. Based on the findings from the dental examination, our dentist sets a treatment plan. Dental veneers can address many esthetic issues of the teeth and gums. Pictures and impressions of teeth are taken and a prototype of the dentition is created at our office. Our dentist designs the veneers with the help of this mould. Initially temporary veneers are fabricated at our office using acrylic. The teeth are prepared such that there is space for bonding the temporaries in place. A small amount of front surface of the teeth is removed and the temporaries are bonded over the teeth. Permanent veneers are fabricated at the lab based on the impressions sent from our office. Once the permanent veneers are delivered to our office, we remove the temporary veneers and clean the teeth before the permanent ones are bonded in place. On completion of the procedure, the patient is informed on how to take care of the veneers and the teeth.
